Back On The Trent

I grabbed a quick 3 hour lure session today down on the river and had a nice pair of typical Trent Pike. The river was almost back down to its normal level but getting to the waters edge was like going through a jungle due to the thick growth of weeds and nettles that have filled the banks during the closed season, but the fish were lively and fought hard in the current like fish twice their size...

...oh, and the teeth were sharp! ;)

I was on the Trent last night too Daz, blanking for barbel !

Got there just before dark - took me a while to find my prefered swim due to the head high nettles, got bit too but only by the bloody mozzies !!

river looked in good trim didn't it

Nice jack to start your season off mate.

Hello Andy, yes Burton Joyce is a great area but since Ashfield Angling Club took it over there is now a list of rules as long as your arm! (There’s even rules telling you how to have a $hit, no joke) I've also been stung with the 'No bloody pike fishing' rant from the bailiff. There was never any problem with the previous club and the pike still grew to a healthy size despite people fishing for them before October. I'd like to see the same rule apply to carp and barbel anglers if it's a case of protecting the fish to give them a chance to grow to specimen size, as that's what the club chairman told me when I asked about scrapping that rule... but can’t see that happening. So in the meantime the responsible pike anglers have to go without fishing for half the season because of an outdated rule.

I'm trying a new area at the moment, if the river level ever gets back to normal, so I'd like to keep quiet about that for now, but anywhere with deep margins and weed/lilies is worth a cast.

There's usually a few below Beeston weir on the Clifton side in the weir pool and anywhere down river from there and further round the bend can be good.

Good luck let me know how you get on.

Daz

Depends which area you are fishing. What part of The Trent were you thinking of fishing? A lot of The Trent is run by angling clubs but nowdays you very rarely see a bailiff on most of the river and not that many anglers either!
